Do You Need To Learn Copywriting?

By editor · Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

From a distance copywriting does not look very hard to do. It’s probably the case that you’ve come across many sales letters in your IM career. But seriously, how hard can that be to write that stuff, and all you’re really trying to do is sell some product? Anyone who has been around IM long enough can tell you that writing good copy is no walk in the park.

Most internet marketers decide to hire a professional copywriter to help them sell their wares. This can be a good idea if writing is not your strong suit. But if your budget can’t handle the outsourcing of this, then you really should at least learn some of the copywriting basics.

Without a good headline, no one will even read the rest of your page. Readers see your headline first, and then make a split second decision to either read or not read the rest of the page. Most beginning copywriters take the “louder is better” approach to headline writing. They usually depend on devices like bold letters and exclamation points rather than coming up with a really good concept. An effective headline has to immediately capture your reader’s attention and also presell him on your offer. Using only a few words, you have to do all this. Look at the headlines that your competitors are using. What do you find appealing? Which headlines cause you to turn away? When you write your own headlines, you should keep this in mind. Don’t be afraid of humor. It’s not impossible to have a successful sales message that contains humor. One thing you can use humor for is to break the ice a little and that will help people to let down their guard. If you can get your readers to laugh you may have a better chance of compelling them to continue reading. Just be careful you don’t tell a tasteless joke – bad idea. Also, you really don’t ever want to appear like you’re trying too hard.

Observe successful marketers in your niche. See how they approach their marketing in their website, etc. What kind of effects does it all have on you? Take notes about what grabs your attnetion. What are your particular reactions to their sales copy? After you read their sales copy, what made you feel the way you do and why? This is how you can learn from others – not steal, but learn. It can take years of study and practice to master copywriting. Good copywriters are so proficient at their work that they make it seem easy. Copywriting is something that is essential to internet marketing. By becoming even a moderately good copywriter, you can greatly improve your business. Copywriting is what sells your products. If you don’t know how to sell your products, why are you trying to sell them in the first place?
