With Christmas fast approaching many are starting to think about gift buying. Digital cameras have continued to fall in price so it’s highly likely that a few of these will find their way into some Christmas stockings this year. But what are the features that you should look out for when shopping for a digital camera?
You’re probably already aware of the importance of a good quality lens. You are probably also aware of megapixels and how the higher the number means a crisper image.
But what about image stabilization technology. This is the clever way that modern cameras can compensate for low light conditions, where higher exposure times are needed, and wobbly hands.
Another feature that you might want to look out for is face detection and auto focus capabilities. Facial recognition technology is great for point and shoot photographers. Ideal for those who like simple point and click cameras.
A good zoom is another feature to look out for. Some cameras use a digital zoom and others use a more conventional optical zoom. Optical zoom is generally sharper than digital which simply enlarges the digital image, lowering the resolution and making the image less sharp.
Something else to look at is battery life. Personally I prefer cameras with rechargeable batteries that have a long battery life.
Look out for additional features like the ability to change lenses, image effects and built in image editing capabilities.
It’s also worth looking at the suite of software applications that come with the camera package. Most digital cameras are supplied with a suite of applications to download, process and edit digital images.
Something extra to consider when buying a new camera is some affordable camera insurance. Today’s lightweight digital cameras are easily lost, stolen or damaged so its worth spending a little money to ensure that your camera is quickly replaced in these circumstances.
