Panasonic TC-P54V10 vs Panasonic TC-P54G10

When it comes to creating quality Plasma HDTVs, Panasonic is an expert. Just take two of its best Plasma sets – the Panasonic TC-P54V10 and TC-P54G10, as examples, both of which have similar excellent features.

For starters, both Viera models come with a THX certified display. This brings the movie theatre experience right to your home, with its cinematic audio and visual ambience so you won’t have to go out of your home and pay for it next time. Colors are also richer and more accurate when the THX mode is enabled, just as gamma performance is better and the image details appear sharper.

If you’re looking for interactive features on an HDTV, you’ll find plenty on either model, as well. After all, both have the complete Viera Cast suite, which provides access to the most recent online information, such as news headlines, local weather reports and movements in the stock market, as well as YouTube videos and Picasa web albums. You can even download or stream TV episodes and movies from Amazon Video on Demand, which currently provides the best videos, many of which are HD, without paying a subscription fee.

Of course, the TC-P54V10 and the TC-P54G10 wouldn’t be among Panasonic’s best Plasma sets if they didn’t have impressive picture quality. In fact, this is the strong point of each, which is mainly due to their significantly inky black levels. This allows for sharper details and makes the rest of the colors appear more saturated. The colors on the TC-P54V10 look even richer, thanks to its Digital Cinema Color engine.

In fact, in spite of their similarities, the TC-P54V10 is superior in several other ways, like video processing, for example. Although both offer excellent motion resolution and can properly display 1080p sources, the TC-P54V10 has a 96Hz Mode, in which it can display 24p sources without any hitching problems. On the other hand, the TC-P54G10 only has a 48Hz mode, which can cause 24p content to flicker across the screen, especially in bright areas.

The TC-P54V10 is also superior in terms of design, even if its frame is thicker than that of the TC-P54G10. In fact, it appears very sleek with its seamless design where a sheet of glass covers the entire panel. It has a subtler silver accent, too, which forms an arc in the middle of the bottom frame. Both have invisible speakers, although the sound produced by the Viera TC-P54V10 is deeper and more authentic because of its BBE ViVA HD3D Sound technology.

For videophiles, another reason to love the Panasonic TC-P54V10 is its Pro Setting Menu, which means it offers more picture adjustments than most Viera models, including the TC-P54G10. It also has an extra picture mode called Studio Ref, for a total of five adjustable picture modes and one that’s independent per input – the Custom mode mentioned earlier. Add to that the usual five color temperature presets, color management options and five aspect ratio selections and you can have many ways to improve the picture quality of your HDTV. There is even a function that adjust it automatically for you in response to the ambient lighting.

Finally, the Panasonic TC-P54V10 has one more HDMI input, which can mean a big difference, especially since HDMI connections provide the best audio and video quality from digital, especially HD devices. Two component video inputs, an SD card slot and a PC input are also provided. Because of all these, the TC-P54V10 is indeed a better model than the TC-P54G10 but if you can’t afford the steep price tag that comes with it, you shouldn’t feel bad about settling for the TC-P54V10 instead.
